• webOS lives on, in open source code.

As majority of tech junkies have assumed, HP will not kill off webOS. As stated on Friday by HP CEO Meg Whitman, webOS will be open source and open to all developers. Although webOS software will remain, hardware will be discontinued indefinitely.

Now the question is how will this transition to open source work? HP has also mentioned licensing webOS to OEMs to create new products running webOS in their blood. The results are in but the news is far from over. How HP will make this move to open source and who will take webOS under their product lines is still a big question. We will be keeping a close eye on HP's future developments for webOS.

      Its a good thing!

It means it will live on and improve, and the broken bits fixed.

It means it will finally be able to live up to its potential that we all knew it had.

It means you will see it running on all sorts of different hardware, other smartphones, tablets, laptops etc

      It was the right decision.

yea, but there are a few things on webos that makes it "webos" that won't be opensource, such as synergy. Still a waiting game right now IMO

well if you look at it from an linux and android perspective is good because now developers will not have to be restrict on what HP says to make but in the other hand since HP will stop supporting such devices the devices are going to die along with the software unless someone decides to take over it but having a competition such as android and ios for competitors in the mobile device industry might make it quite hard to keep up

hardware will always be there......haven't you ever heard of China? If they make android devices they will certainly make webOS also. One way the hardware will be there if there is a market.

webOS is a much more stable os than Android IMHO I think the only thing is the plethora of apps. It's all a mystery to me....
