[Tutorial] Unicode fonts on Touchpad for Vietnamese language!! Hello everyone. I'm a new TouchPad owner here, and a new member of precentral as well
Having the TouchPad so far has been a great exerience, but I was a little ticked off that I could not read anything in Vietnamese when I come across websites such as yahoo.vn or vnexpress.net. Even youtube search in Vietnamese do not appear correctly, all I see is square box

So I begin to dig around the net and found that HP decide to get rid of Unicode in all their fonts!
Luckily I found this Vietnamese website who was very informative on finding how to add Unicode fonts to the TouchPad but was missing key fonts here and there, and applications wasn't working correctly without "stock" fonts. So without further adieu, here are the instructions to adding unicode fonts to your TouchPad! I believe these will only work for non-character asian sites, beside chinese.
1. Make sure your TouchPad has enough battery life, greater than 50%. Plug your TP into your computer or laptop, and set to USB mode.
2. Download this Unicode Fonts, and extract it as is to your TP drive on the computer. Note: Again extract as is directly to the HP TouchPad drive in your computer, not any other folder.
3. Disconnect USB mode by safely remove hardware, but leave the wire still connected. Turn on Developer Mode on your TP, and open WeOSQuickInstall.jar. You should know how to do this already, if not read up on it before proceeding!
4. Click on Tools, then Linux Commandline. Copy this command without quotes "mount -o remount,rw /" and paste to the window that appeared after you click on Linux Commandline, then hit enter on your laptop or pc. Do not do CTRL+V for paste as it will not work, you have to physically right click and select paste!
5. Copy this command without quotes "cp media/internal/HPbackupunicodefonts/*.* usr/share/fonts", and hit enter on your laptop or pc. Again, do not do CTRL+V, as I know a lot of people would love to do just that.
Wait a few seconds until it finish and you see two lines displaying "root@........" Then you're done.
6. Remove the usb cord from your TP, clear cache out from your browser on your TouchPad (you should know how to do this already too, if not search here or google
) Reboot your TP completely, not luna restart, but complete restart it.
7. Enjoy
Mod please make this a sticky as I think it's necessary because this took me quite a few days of trial and error to find out what fonts were needed, and to have all games/apps to work! If anyone can, please spread this news out to your fellow friends and websites but please do not take sole credit for it.
Thanks all!

Thanks for posting but I have a couple questions. Would this font support arabic text? I assume that it couldn't hurt but wanted to confirm before trying. The missing key fonts here and there comment scares me. Should something go terribly wrong can these fonts be removed? Could you perhaps go to the following site http://shahid.mbc.net/ and send me a screenshot from your TP so I can confirm how it looks? I would greatly appreciate the help.

you cannot type using vietnamese characters because I don't have a keyboard layout for that, and it gets much more complex. These fonts are only for the TP to show whatever you want to read in it's correct form. Glad to help all of yall out! Share along and remember don't take sole credit.

Need help for download Vietnamese fonts to touchpad
I did download Unicode Fonts and extract it to my TP. At USB mode, on my laptop I have HPbackupunicodefonts folder but as open in linux: media/internal no file there. This dir is empty. So I can not copy over this file to usr/share/fonts. I have few questions and need help here:
1/How we can "extract " file (this one now already in laptor drive)to HP touchpad so it locate on media/internal
2/If we have this file as new folder file in TP do we have anyway locate it on the linux command and move it to media/internal.
Thanks a lot

Thanh, you have to either extract or copy it over to the TouchPad hard drive when you're in USB mode, once you're done, you HAVE to get out of USB mode and just go into regular "cancel" mode or "just charge" mode. From there you can do your linux command.

Ofcorse it would be very simple if we have a keyboard layout. Meanwhile, we can still edit the autoreplace file in the OS to type in vietnamese with the AutoCorrect function enabled. I saw elsewhere an edited autoreplace file which allow to type vietnamese characters on a Palm Pre, but I didn't manage to do the same on Touchpad.

Since Vietnamese support is there I would assume that other indic language should work. But for my case it did not. I am trying to enable Bengali and I included a Bengali font from here sachalayatan.com\BNG.ttf . I followed the steps but unfortunately it did not work!

xterminater,
Can you please point out what I might be missing? Thanks for your help in advance!

My Guide is strictly for Vietnamese fonts to display properly. It "should" technically work for all other languages as long as you have the right font having UNICODE in it! Please refer to your windows fonts drive for unicode of whatever you want to replace, and just put it in the folder of mine and it should work. Again, I don't know and probably won't know because I can't try every fonts!
