[How-To] Grab And Create An IPK File From Your WebOS Phone
Gonna show you how to get an IPK (the easy way) onto your computer to post onto a file sharing website for this website.
Sounds pretty neat eh?
Really easy to do, even for you guys out there who aren't even skilled with your WebOS device.
This works with Pixi as well.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Step-By-Step
The first part here is done on the phone
I've included pictures as well to make it even easier, how nice of me.
Video is coming soon for the second part down there, but it's also pretty basic. Shouldn't be hard at all.
For this little tutorial I'm gonna show you all how to extract Bad Kitty (it works for any app, I just chose Bad Kitty as a example)
And to prove it I've taken a picture of the Bad Kitty app in my launcher.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

1) Open up Internalz (or download it if you don't have it, then open it)
-----------------------------------------------------------------

2) Click the top folder that takes you back ".."
-----------------------------------------------------------------

3) Click on "cryptofs"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

4) Click on "apps"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

5) Click on "usr"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

6) Click on "palm"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

7) Click on "applications"
-----------------------------------------------------------------

8) Pick any folder of an app you want to turn into a IPK.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

9) Tap it and hold so the drop down menu comes down
-----------------------------------------------------------------

10) Click on "Copy" (Don't move it or it will screw up the app on the phone)
Once copied it should show "Copied: (Name of app)" as shown in the picture.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

11) Just tap on "/media/internal" as the folder to copy it to
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Once the copy is done, You should the folder inside your internal folder if you go back to it, as shown above.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Then plug your phone into your computer go to the USB drive and it should be there. From there you do as follows:
1) Drag and drop the folder onto your desktop
-----------------------------------------------------------------
2) Open up Ipk Packager. You can find it on Precentral in Canuck Software section, or if you don't want the trouble of trying to find it. Here's the download link:
http://ipk-packager.googlecode.com/f...20Packager.jar
-----------------------------------------------------------------
3) Once open click on "..."
-----------------------------------------------------------------
4) A new window should open up click on the folder you copied onto your desktop, click open.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
5) It should then show all the info of the app in the fields to the left.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
6) Click "Create IPK"
-----------------------------------------------------------------
7) A window should open up asking you were to save the IPK, usually I just do the desktop, click Save
-----------------------------------------------------------------
8) Wait for a bit then it should come up with a pop-up message saying it was created successfully.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
And then if you look where you saved the IPK it should be there ready to be uploaded to MU or RS.
Happy posting guys.

Very nicely done. Thanks man
how about to load it up to rapidshare is that free to do?
- 09-23-2010, 12:21 PM #3
Yup it is free to do, all you need is to sign up for an account.
You could upload it without an account but it has a 10 person download limit
I prefer to use Megaupload, rapidshare doesn't allow you to download files from our phones thus not allowing to install apps on there.
Rapidshare seems to download the download link instead of the actual file through your phone.Life is a journey, not a destination.

Mediafire is even better. There's no wait to download the file and it gives you full speeds. Also, nice tutorial!

True.
But if you have a Premium account on MU there's no wait time.Life is a journey, not a destination.

please make a preware app that lets you select an app, and zip/store it and send it to a ftp server.
that would really make caring easier !!

wish it was that easy. don't know how to create such an app. might hire someone when webOS gets more popular.

Over at another site I visit got a message from a well known user saying this:
I thought it was a great idea, however I haven't heard anything from him since sending me this and that was on July 11th.I saw your attempt on using Dropbox and Jason's ipkg feed create for creating a Preware feed.
I'm thinking of creating a feed too, but in a different way. The goal is not having to update for example a Dropbox every time an update is made on the forum.
I may try to use the API within a script to grab all app titles, descriptions, download links.
Then I may create a modified version of Preware which would download automatically from filehosters that have no download limits, for example file-upload.net and mediafire.com.
If there would be no such hoster, it'd open the thread within a browser.
If we would get this working, users should be advised for new releases to upload on the Preware supported hosters. To make this successful most current releases should be mirrored on the supported hosters.
The feed would update automatically every day or the like.Life is a journey, not a destination.

thats some good stuff. if he wants to, we can make a dedicated section for all things that will go to that app/feed.
